The Major League Baseball All-Star Game, also known as the Midsummer Classic, marks the symbolic halfway point of the season. Designated talented and popular players from the two leagues temporarily leave their home teams and form American League and National League super teams.
What is the history of All-Star baseball games?
The All-Star tradition dates back to the 1933 World’s Fair in Chicago. It was the brainchild of Arch Ward, sports editor for the Chicago Tribune. He was backed by Will Harridge, the American League president. The game took place July 6, 1933, at Comiskey Park, home stadium of the American League’s Chicago White Sox, and was supposed to be a one-time event. But it was so successful, a tradition was born.
How coaches and players are chosen
Last year’s pennant-winning managers get the honor of being in charge of the All-Star teams. In 2024, that’s Torey Lovullo for the National League and Bruce Bochy for the American League. These men get to choose their coaching staff.
The starting players are voted in by fans in two phases. In the first, the field is wide open and fans choose their top pick at each position. The second phase narrows things down to two finalists.
What’s new for the MLB All-Star Game in 2024?
The game will take place at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas, which is home to the Rangers.
All eyes will be on Pirates rookie Paul Skenes. He has already been announced as the starting pitcher for the National League team. This is an amazing feat for a first-year player but not surprising after his impressive playing. He has lived up to his first-round draft pick.
The American League may have a chip on its shoulder after last year’s 3-2 loss. The National League will be gunning for consecutive wins. However, the American League has the better overall record with 47 wins, 44 losses, and two ties.
Live from Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas, it’s the 2024 MLB All-Star Game!
It’s been a wild first half of the regular season. The young Baltimore Orioles (58-38) have a one-game lead over the New York Yankees in the American League East, the Cleveland Guardians have a 30-11 home record, and the Philadelphia Phillies have the best record in baseball (62-34).
Later tonight, the best of the best take the field in baseball’s annual battle between the American and National Leagues. Rookie sensation Paul Skenes gets the start for the N.L. as he tries to subdue Orioles star Adley Rutschman, Blue Jays slugger Vladimir Guerrero Jr., MVP hopeful Gunnar Henderson, and the rest of the dangerous A.L. lineup. The full roster of all-stars can be found on the MLB website.
At the symbolic halfway point in the season, the All-Star Game, a.k.a. the Midsummer Classic, presses pause on the season as teams readjust for the months ahead. For fans, it’s a great showcase to see the top sluggers and pitchers in the game all take the field at once.
Fans vote to determine starting fielders, while coaches and managers nominate the pitching rosters for the American and National League teams. Soto has been named to the All-Star roster for the third straight year, and for a third team. He has represented the Washington Nationals (2022) and San Diego Padres (2023) previously, and this year represents the New York Yankees.
The New York Mets do not have any starters this year, but Pete Alonso will be a reserve infielder for the National League team. The National League is headlined by Ohtani and a deep squad of Phillies players including Bryce Harper, Alec Bohm and Trea Turner.
Pittsburgh Pirates rookie phenom Paul Skenes was selected to start the game for the National League, while new Baltimore Orioles ace Corbin Burnes will take the mound for the American League.
Monday night, eight hitters will vie for the Home Run Derby title, with the Midsummer Classic to follow Tuesday night.
The American League All-Star roster is led by the Yankees' power-hitting duo of Aaron Judge and Juan Soto, along with the Rangers' Marcus Semien. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. from the Blue Jays, Adley Rutschman from the Orioles and Yordan Alvarez from the Astros are also some of the marquee names.
The National League also pacts a punch with the Phillies' trio of Bryce Harper, Trea Turner and Alec Bohm along with the Dodgers' Shohei Ohtani, San Diego's Fernando Tatis Jr., and the Brewers' Christian Yelich. Fantastic rookie Paul Skenes will be on the hill first for the NL.
It will be a fierce competition as both teams are stacked with superstar athletes. On the National League, the starters include the Dodgers' Shohei Ohtani, Christian Yelich from the Brewers, the Phillies' Bryce Harper, and the Pirates' Paul Skenes. Over on the American League, the Yankees's Aaron Judge and Juan Soto will be starters, along with the Orioles' Adley Rutschman and the Astros' Yordan Alvarez.
The All-Star Game pits the best in the American League against the best in the National League. While it no longer determines home-field advantage in the World Series as it did for a brief time, the game is still a fun opportunity to see some of baseball's marquee players compete and play alongside each other. Among some of the big names participating in the All-Star game are Shohei Ohtani, Aaron Judge, Bryce Harper, Vladimir Guerro Jr., Fernando Tatis Jr. and more.
It's no surprise that teams like the Yankees, Phillies, and Dodgers have strong showings at the All-Star Game this year. With their league-leading records, the likes of Aaron Judge, Bryce Harper, Juan Soto, and Shohei Ohtani are all taking the field. Amongst veteran pitchers Max Fried, Seth Lugo, and Corbin Burners, perhaps the biggest talk of the town in Arlington is the Pittsburgh Pirates Paul Skenes.
MLB is gearing up to host the 94th edition of the All-Star Game, a mid-season spectacle where the top talents from the National League and American League face off. This year, the action will unfold at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas, adding extra excitement to an already fierce season as teams battle for postseason spots.
Leading the National League will be Torey Lovullo, head coach of the Arizona Diamondbacks, while the American League will be under the guidance of Bruce Bochy from the Texas Rangers. As players unite and rivalries intensify, fans can expect a thrilling showcase of baseball’s finest talent.
The last pitcher from the Pirates to start the All-Star game was Jerry Reuss in 1975, in the middle of a decade when Pittsburgh won two World Series. That’s the second-longest active drought without a pitcher starting the All-Star game. The Chicago Cubs have not had one since Claude Passeau in 1946. (The Miami Marlins have never had the starting pitcher for the National League, but they’ve only been playing since 1993.)
The longest drought in the American League belongs to the Baltimore Orioles, who have not had the All-Star starter since Steve Stone in 1980. Corbin Burnes could potentially be chosen to start this year’s edition, which takes place Tuesday night.
This stellar beginning to Skenes’ career — in 11 starts, he’s 6-0 with a 1.90 ERA — has made his outings must-see TV and brought a bit of buzz to Pittsburgh. The Pirates are 48-48, which puts them in the mix for a wild card. Skenes and outfielder Bryan Reynolds are both All-Stars. The team hasn’t had more than two in a season since 2015, when Andrew McCutchen and Gerrit Cole were both in Pittsburgh.
Now McCutchen is back with the Pirates as his career winds down, and with Skenes, Reynolds and 6-foot-7 shortstop Oneil Cruz, Pittsburgh has a chance to turn some heads the rest of the way.
The Oakland Athletics pummeled Philadelphia 18-3 on Sunday. Although the A’s are 24 games under .500, they’re also responsible for the three highest-scoring games in baseball this year. Oakland also beat Miami 20-4 on May 4 and routed Baltimore 19-8 on July 6.
Oakland is also one of just five teams in the majors to be shut out at least 10 times already. The Chicago White Sox are atop that list with 12.
It belongs to Skenes, who pitched seven no-hit innings at Milwaukee on Thursday before being removed after 99 pitches. The Pirates won 1-0. Opponents are batting just .202 against Skenes.
It was still 9-6 with Detroit down to its last out, but then Carson Kelly hit an RBI single and rookie Colt Keith tied it with a two-run homer. Gio Urshela than hit a two-run shot in the 10th to end the game.
